  1. African Black Soap

This product is more of a long term skin care essential. I have never experienced another product that is as effective for oily skin. By incorporating Black Soap into your skin care regimen at least three times a week, you will slowly start to notice a difference in the amount of oiliness throughout the day. This product is made of all natural ingredients such as coconut oil, shea butter, and plantain extract. This soap tends to be a little harsh on sensitive skin. If you notice that your skin is becoming too dry or irritated after use, lessen the amount of times you use this product throughout the week. Monitor your skin and find a good balance that works for you. People with eczema should be very careful with this product. Black Soap might irritate your skin and possibly cause and eczema flare up. If you are like me, it is definitely possible to have a combination of eczema and oily skin. There are many different brands of black soap, however, I have found Shea Natural Creamy Black Soap to be most effective for me. This will best be used with a cleansing brush or sponge.

2. Mattifying Primer

The Smashbox Photo Finish Pore Minimizing Primer is the perfect formula for a combination of oily skin and huge pores. Oily skin has been said to cause large pores. Oil gets trapped in those pores causing them to expand and appear enlarged. An article from Forever Young by Perricone MD explains how the oil glands also affects the pores. The Pore Minimizing Primer is great for oily skin because chances are you have large pores due to oil. The formula is also oil-free and matte, which kills any shine on the skin before and after makeup application.

3. Oil-Free/ Long-Wear Foundation

Sticking with the theme of oil-free products for obvious reasons, a great foundation by Smashbox Cosmetics is the Studio Skin 15 Hour Wear Hydrating Foundation. AMAZING! I can literally go hours without blotting and touching up my foundation. Not only do I struggle with oily skin, but I sweat easily, and A LOT! Trust me when I say this foundation lives up to its claims. Even if you do have to blot at some point, you definitely do not have to touch up or add more foundation.

4. Shine Control Finishing Powder

After applying all of your cosmetic products, you want to lock those in with a good finishing powder. You want to be sure that all of those oil-free and mattifying products are set in place. MAC’s Prep + Prime Transparent Finishing Powder/Pressed is fantastic for the job. Not only is it great to apply directly after makeup application, but it works well as a blotting powder if necessary. If you do start to get a little oily, just pull out this finishing powder and apply. It will get rid of the visible shine. The powder is white but it will not leave a white cast on your face, no matter your skin tone or shade.

Of course everyone’s skin is different and reacts differently to certain methods or products. These are four products that I have found to produce excellent results for my oily skin. You can try out my tips first and see what works well for you.
